2023 Happenings in Sharon Woods

January 1, 2023

Happy new year, neighbors! A lot has been going on lately in Sharon Woods.

First of all, we continue to keep John Kirkpatrick and his family in our thoughts and prayers. John has been the president of the Sharon Woods Civic Association several times and has led us well over the years. He suffered a stroke this past July and has been recovering ever since. He continues to make progress and his family is grateful for the outpouring of support from our community, including lawn maintenance, calls, visits, and more.

I and other members of our association have been keeping tabs on the latest news coming from the Northland Community Council’s (NCC) Development Committee. This group meets monthly to review cases presented by developers for potential future business renovation/construction in the Northland area, as well as addressing zoning violations for existing buildings. The NCC Development Committee hears these cases and votes on whether or not they should be recommended for approval by the City of Columbus. Sharon Woods is represented at committee meetings each month by one of our association’s Trustees so that our neighborhood can have a voice in these discussions.

Here are just a few examples of some recent cases brought before the NCC Development Committee:

  • A request was submitted for the conversion of the MStar Motel on 161 from one-bedroom rooms into “micro motel” condominiums, each approximately 300 square feet in size. This case was not recommended for approval.
  • A request was submitted for the construction of an automatic car wash along 161, on a parcel in the southwest corner of the former Giant Eagle location (now housing a self-storage business). This case was recommended for approval.
  • A request was submitted for the construction of a five-building condominium complex at 5869–5877 Cleveland Avenue, totaling 41 units in one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations. This case was recommended for approval.
  • A request was submitted for the construction of a multifamily affordable senior independent living facility at 5860 Roche Drive (the former location of Capri Lanes). This case was not recommended for approval at the time due to insufficient information from the developer.

As you can see, having representation at these committee meetings is critical for knowing what’s being proposed in and around Sharon Woods and allowing our neighborhood to weigh in on any issues that will affect residents. If you have any questions about this process, just get in touch with me (740-971-7495).

Finally, I’d like to draw your attention to the various service opportunities we have right here in Sharon Woods. Would you consider stepping up and helping out? If any of these projects are of interest to you, or if you have any questions, just get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help get you connected.
